Top Shotgun Ammo for Gamebirds

If you like to hunt upland game birds, waterfowl or turkey then a steady supply of quality ammo for your favorite shotgun is a must. Midsouth Shooters Supply has been around since 1969 and offers a wide variety of quality shotgun ammo and reloading supplies for all gauges.

Below are just a few thoughts on gauge and shot size based on my experience in the hunting field. Without a doubt there are many other choices that could be made based on your experience and game pursued.

Dove and Quail

I like size 8 and 7 ½ shot in all gauges from .410 up to 12ga. Occasionally I may use shot size of 6 if I am hunting some of the larger doves such as Eurasian, whitewing or Band Tailed Pigeon. If shooting Bobwhite quail over dogs, then I stick with size 8 or 7 ½ in the standard game load. If I find myself chasing Scaled quail across the desert, I may go up to size 6 shot in a heavy field load.

Federal, Winchester, Fiocchi along with many other name brands are well represented at Midsouth in the shotgun ammo section.

Pheasant

Here we could also talk Sharp-tailed, Prairie Chicken, and Hungarian Partridge. When hunting pheasant in close proxemics, usually over a dog, I love a high brass 7 ½ load, normally in a 12ga, 16ga or 20ga. Otherwise for these larger upland game birds I most often go with number 6 shot, or one of the specialty loads like Federal Prairie Storm designed specifically for these prairie game birds.

Waterfowl

Boy has shotgun ammo for waterfowl hunting ever changed over the years since the duck and goose hunting days of my youth! The choices in this category abound at Midsouth with offerings in both Bismuth and Steel.

I like size 6, 4, 3, 2 or BB size shot for waterfowl depending on the hunting situation and the birds themselves.

Turkey

Turkey hunting loads is also one of the shotshell ammo categories that has changed greatly over the years. Copper plated and Tungsten Turkey loads in 10ga on down are available at Midsouth.

Normally shot size of 4, 5 or 6 suffices quite well. Of course, some of the “old fashion” lead shot loads are still very effective where state and federal laws still allow for both turkey and waterfowl.

Federal Heavy Shot TSS 20 Gauge

Bottom line is Midsouth Shooters Supply has all your shotgun ammo needs aside from just bird hunting, but also for varmints, big game and self-defense. Oh, and by the way, Midsouth has a great selection of rifle, handgun, and rimfire ammo along with reloading supplies for a wide variety of shooting needs.
