Long before you’ll feel the excitement on the range of a 3-gun match you’ll need to pick your poison, and by that, I mean you’ll need to determine the guns you want to shoot. For many, it will be the guns they already own, rather than dedicated competition guns. However, the beauty of 3-gun—particularly at the local level—is that you do not have to have the most fancy, tricked-out, race guns. You can grab what you have available, be competitive, and have a lot of fun while reinforcing or building your shooting skills.
While that all sounds fine—and is completely true—we know the hidden truth. We like accessories. We want furniture and enjoy tricking out our guns with new accessories whether they really ‘need’ it or not. Some mods are just for fun and others are to make it look cool. Best of all, are the ones that gain us a few extra points during the match. While it would be easy enough to simply show you the accessories I am running and believe to be best, I learned a long time ago that you only need two shooters in the room to have three different opinions about which accessories are best.
So instead of my picks, we looked for some of the most commonly used add-ons you’ll either be shooting with, or at the very least, against. Magpul has always been a leading contender, both with top shooters and in the industry as a whole. Recent news has put Magpul on some people’s radar, but to anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock, you’ll likely recognize one of your favorites in our roundup of stocks and grips.
Stocks
PRS Precision Rifle/Sniper Stock
The Magpul PRS AR15/M16 Model is a drop-in, precision-adjustable butt stock for rifles with A1/A2 fixed stocks. The PRS mounts to the rifle-length receiver extension tube. Features include an enhanced strength, aluminum butt-plate to withstand severe impact and recoil up to the venerable .50 BMG. The rubber butt-pad provides positive shoulder purchase to prevent slippage, while the machined-aluminum adjustment knobs offer positive locking click detents.
The PRS can improve your weapon’s performance thanks to the improved balance and stability of the stout construction. As an added bonus, the PRS includes a bottom Picatinny rail with removable cover for use with a monopod.
CTR Compact/Type Restricted Stock
The Magpul CTR Mil-Spec Model is a drop-in replacement butt stock for AR15/M16 carbines using mil-spec-sized receiver extension tubes. The lightweight CTR was designed with fast-action performance in mind. The streamlined A-frame profile avoids snagging and shields the release latch to prevent accidental activation. The extra-power lock mechanism uses a premium chrome-silicon spring to avert auto-collapse failure and maintains strength by resisting spring relaxation.
The CTR also features a supplemental friction lock system that minimizes wobble for enhanced weapon stability and accuracy, and includes a standard 0.30” rubber butt-pad, which provides positive shoulder purchase to prevent slippage even with body armor or modular gear. The tail of the CTR opens to reveal a storage compartment and is compatible with Magpul ASAP and other receiver-mount sling attachments.
UBR Utility Battle Rifle Stock
The Magpul UBR (Utility/Battle Rifle), U.S. Patent 6651371, is a fully-featured, adjustable buttstock for the AR15/M16. Unlike typical collapsing stocks, this modular design offers the stability of a fixed stock with a consistent cheek weld in any position. The UBR mounts on the included durable Entry-Length Receiver Extension tube to accommodate the common M4 carbine buffer and spring.
The 7-position length-of-pull (LOP) adjustability features a customizable preset system for fast access to your preferred length. The adjustment lever requires only gross motor movement to operate yet the entire stock remains streamlined with an anti-snag profile. With the UBR, both front and rear QD swivel sling mounts are reversible and fit up to 1.5” pushbutton swivels (swivel not included) and bottom 1.25” sling loop.
ACS Adaptive Carbine/Storage Stock
The streamlined, anti-snag profile shields the release latch to prevent accidental activation. Similar to the Magpul CTR, the ACS features a supplemental friction lock system that minimizes excessive stock movement for enhanced weapon stability and accuracy. Dual, rear accessible, water resistant battery storage tubes and an integral storage compartment in the butt of the stock provides multiple storage options. The ACS comes standard with a 0.30” thick rubber butt-pad, which provides positive shoulder purchase to prevent slippage even with body armor or modular gear.

ACS-L Adaptive Carbine Stock – Light
The Magpul ACS-L is a drop-in replacement buttstock for AR15/M16 carbines using mil-spec sized receiver extension tubes. A streamlined version of the ACS, the ACS-L utilizes the same center storage compartment and cheek weld but removes the battery tubes for a slimmer, lighter weight package.
The ACS is a drop-in replacement for the standard M4 stock. Highlights include a shielded operation lever, reinforced polymer construction and improved cheek weld design.
SGA Stock Remington 870
The SGA Stock is a user-configurable buttstock designed to add much-needed adjustability to the tried and true Remington 870 12-ga. shotgun. Featuring a spacer system for length of pull adjustment, improved grip ergonomics, recoil-reducing butt-pad, optional cheek risers for use with optics/raised sights and other accessories, the SGA 870 brings Magpul design and engineering to another classic American firearm.
The SGA 870 utilizes a spacer-adjustable LOP in 1/2” increments from 12.5” to 14.5”. Features include a recoil reducing butt-pad, integral right/left 1.25” sling loops, reinforced polymer construction and interchangeable cheek pieces for comb height adjustment.
STR Storage/Type Restricted Carbine Stock
The STR is a replacement for the standard M4 stock—Mil-Spec and Commercial-Spec models available— and is shorter and lighter than the ACS Stock. However, shorter in size does not mean Magpul has left any features out the design.
The STR Carbine Stock is a drop-in replacement for M4-type carbine stocks. The STR has improved cheek weld and two water-resistant battery tubes on a reinforced polymer A-frame design. A shielded operation lever and friction locking system prevent accidental adjustment and eliminate excessive stock movement. The STR incorporates two sling loops, left and right side QD sling mount locations and a replaceable rubber butt pad.
MOE Fixed Carbine Stock
The MOE Fixed Carbine Stock provides a fixed, non-collapsing stock option for carbine-length buffer tubes. The MOE Fixed Carbine Stock has a slim profile, improved cheek weld, and multiple sling attachment options, and is compatible with the ASAP Plate and PRS Extended Rubber Butt Pad. Installation is non-armorer and does not require the castle nut or lock plate to be removed. The MOE Fixed Carbine Stock features integrated footman’s loop sling points and optional dual-side QD mounting points.
Grips
The MIAD (MIssion ADaptable) Grip is a drop-in replacement for the standard AR15/M16/M4 pistol grip, and was designed to improve weapon ergonomics. The MIAD incorporates interchangeable front and rear straps, as well as a range of storage core options that allow the end user to adjust the grip for hand size as well as dynamic mission requirements. The MIAD comes standard with all mounting hardware included.
MOE Grip AR15/M16
The MOE Grip provides Magpul quality, feel, and durability in an economical, drop-in upgrade for the standard AR15/M16/ M4 pistol grip. The ergonomic, hand-filling design combines aggressive texturing with storage core capability. With a similar shape to a ‘medium’ sized MIAD, the one-piece reinforced polymer construction provides simplicity and a reduced cost while maintaining the durability needed to withstand operational environments. The MOE Grip accepts optional storage cores for gear stowage and includes a basic grip cap. All mounting hardware included.
MOE+ Grip Rubber Overmold Grip
The MOE+ Grip combines a reinforced polymer body construction with comfortable, wrap-around rubber overmolding for maximum weapon control in adverse environments. With a similar shape to a ‘medium-sized’ MIAD, the AR15/M16 drop-in design features a hard-polymer bottom edge to reduce the possibility of equipment snags or grip damage. The MOE+ Grip accepts optional storage cores for gear stowage and includes a basic grip cap.
